I thought that the possible reason for the album looking very simple could be because the artist is already a well known artist. It is obvious that the artist is the main focal point in this cover as everything else included does not seem to stand out as much as he does, apart from the name of the album 'Bad' which is shown in a different colour to the rest of the text. Photographer Sam Emerson was personally chosen by Michael for the album cover.

Growing up watching the abuse he got for his appearance and other things, shaped my view of people, of how ignorant and prejudiced people can be. Just back then, it was the start of the lynch mob (regardless of ethnicity) which he unfortunately never escaped from. Of course, over the years with hindsight & understanding how vitiligo looks with a flashgun, the cover makes sense, & I love the cover. Personally, at 7 years old when this was released, I remember being surprised by his appearance (on the cover, not the Bad video or his general appearance) but that didn't last long, the music affirmed it was 'My Michael Jackson'.

The first single from Bad "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" never had a music video. There were 4 compilation albums release between Thriller and Bad, all of which had Michael with his original skin pigmentation. It was a different time back then, no internet, no fast way to gather and digest facts. At the time of its release, Michael was a recluse (he always was I suppose) - We were 'used' to seeing Michael, Thriller era and younger, when his vitiligo wasn't as severe and the condition was much lesser known.
